The Case

The Assembly Process: Precision at Every Step

Step 1: Case Preparation

The case is cleaned ultrasonically to remove any residual oils or particles from manufacturing. Gaskets are inspected and, if necessary, replaced with fresh ones treated with silicone grease to ensure proper sealing. The case back, crown tube, and crystal seat are all checked for proper fit.

Step 2: Dial and Hands Installation

This is one of the most delicate phases of assembly. The dial is mounted onto the movement using dial feet that must align precisely with the movement's mounting holes. Even a fraction of a millimetre of misalignment would cause the dial to sit unevenly, affecting both aesthetics and function.

The hands are then pressed onto their respective posts using specialised hand-setting tools. The hour hand seats onto the hour wheel, the minute hand onto the cannon pinion, and the seconds hand onto the fourth wheel post. Each must be pressed to the correct depth: too shallow and they may catch on each other; too deep and they may drag against the dial. This operation requires a steady hand, patience, and experience.

Step 3: Movement Installation

With dial and hands attached, the movement assembly is carefully lowered into the case. The stem must thread precisely through the crown tube, and the movement must seat squarely on its mounting points. Movement spacer rings ensure proper positioning and prevent any lateral play.

Step 4: Bezel Assembly

The bezel insert is mounted onto the bezel ring, which is then seated onto the case with its click spring or gasket mechanism. For diving-style bezels, the unidirectional rotation must be tested: the bezel should turn freely counter-clockwise with satisfying, even clicks, and lock firmly against clockwise rotation. Each click must be consistent, with no play or dead spots.

Step 5: Crystal Installation

The sapphire crystal is pressed into the case using a crystal press fitted with the appropriate die. The crystal must seat evenly against its gasket, creating a seal that contributes to the overall water resistance of the timepiece. Too little pressure and the crystal may not seal properly. Too much and the crystal or case could be damaged. Experience and the right tooling make the difference.

Step 6: Case Back and Crown

The case back is secured, whether by screw-down threading or snap-fit mechanism. The crown is threaded onto the stem and tested for smooth winding action, proper date-setting engagement, and secure screw-down locking where applicable. The crown is the primary interface between the wearer and the movement, so its operation must be flawless.

Quality Control: Where Standards Are Proven

Assembly is only half the story. A timepiece that has been built must be proven before it reaches your wrist. Our quality control process is thorough and uncompromising.

Timekeeping Accuracy

Each completed timepiece is placed on a timing machine that measures its rate in multiple positions: dial up, dial down, crown up, crown down, crown left, and crown right. We assess the daily rate, amplitude, and beat error across these positions. An automatic movement that performs well in only one position is not performing well enough. We require consistency.

Visual Inspection

Under magnification, every surface is examined. We check for dust beneath the crystal, alignment of hands, centring of the dial, condition of the bezel insert, and quality of all external surfaces. A single speck of dust trapped under the crystal is enough to disassemble the watch and begin the crystal installation again.

Water Resistance Testing

For timepieces rated for water resistance, we conduct pressure testing to verify that all seals perform as specified. This is not a formality. It is a critical safety measure that protects the movement from moisture ingress, which is one of the most common causes of movement failure.

Function Testing

Every function is exercised. The crown winds smoothly. The date changes crisply at midnight. The bezel rotates with proper resistance. The bracelet or strap attaches securely. The clasp opens and closes with confidence. Nothing is assumed. Everything is verified.
